I am not religious but I grew up exposed to many iterations of Christianity, from the relatively mundane mainstream Church of Scotland, where the greyness of the minister and beigeness of the sermon was paramount. On the other hand I also got to experienced the hell and danmation preachings from American pastors who somehow found their way to Scotland and from Scotlands own plastic copy Jack Glass.

So it’s with a tormented memory of these sermons, in which the Book of Revelations was the religious equivalent of the money shot, I’m utterly perplexed as to why Americans don’t recognise the devil in their midst?

Now, I’ll clarify it here, I’m not putting on my sandwich board and saying “Jesus Is Coming” and “The World Is Neigh”. Even though in my 50 odd years on the planet it’s never been in a shitier place. It’s entirely man made and let’s be honest, it’s a failure of Christians to live up to the teachings of their supposed saviour. Tolerance and love of fellow man has been replaced by greed and an unquenched thirst for power.

The culmination of a desire to force their extreme secular views over American society has literally seen them make a pact with a devil. You would think these so called evangelical Christian’s having been soaked in the prophecies of St John would be in absolute terror as they check off the boxes of Trumps blatant character traits. A liar, check! A fornicating adulterer, check! A sexual predator (with more actions to come), check! A fraudster, check! Let’s face it the man is devoid of any moral integrity and is the antithesis of the character any Christian should admire, let alone demagogue!

So why are the people who fear eternal damnation not absolutely terrified of electing such a man to the presidency? A man who literally matches the baddie in their favourite book! It’s because they think they have a way of using the false prophet to turn their science denying, Christian fundamentalist beliefs into the laws of the America. They totally want a secular state where the extreme minority views are used to destroy the lives of others. They don’t want to go back to the 1950’s, they want to go back to the 1750’s.

However they and every single person in America should be wary of electing a man who believes he stands above the law and accountability. He believes that he can rip up the constitution as he sees fit and has surrounded himself with sycophants and malevolents who will not only do his bidding but try to enhance their own twisted and distorted visions of a autocratic and dystopian America where democracy is hollowed out. Institutions that protect the lives and health of the population will become impotent if their protections threaten the ability for someone to make a profit.

American technological advancement will be halted as future generations endure an education system where scientific facts are sacrificed on the alter of minority fundamental beliefs. On the slippery slope of power Trump will rip up the constitution line by line and in the ultimate irony, would easily reverse the 2nd amendment if he thought there was a risk to his power.

The consequences of re-electing a man to power who tried to cheat his way into a 2nd term is something every sane American should seriously consider. A desire for Freedom is a foundation of your country. Why would you even risk that belief on someone, who would openly extinguish any freedoms if they are in conflict with his desire for control? Or, more worryingly are desired to be eradicated by a section of society that will further enrich him to do their bidding.

There is still hope for America but it will take the strength of decent American citizens to demand more of their system. A system where no man is above the law, should ensure that no one can evade the accountability by cheating the system. Politicians should be punished for lying. Political speak should never be exempt from the legal ramifications. Running for office isn’t a right or an excuse to avoid accountability. It’s a privilege that only the worthy should qualify. Otherwise you risk a future where anyone from a mob boss to serial killer could run for president to avoid judicial accountability. Seriously? It’s in your hands, you, the people, should be demanding that your representatives and legal institutions demagnetise Trump and realign your moral compass on a course to democracy and accountability.
